We all know about the need to spring clean our house and clear out all the "stuff" we don't need anymore--dust bunnies included! But spring is also an important time to cleanse your body from the heavier foods of winter and any toxins you may have accumulated.
A simple way to start is to take a break from rich or complex foods for a short time, ideally at least a week.
During this time, you can cleanse by eating mostly fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains, and drinking plenty of water.
Staying away from processed foods, caffeine and sugar is highly recommended while you cleanse.
Cleansing can improve digestion and immune function, boost energy, and help sharpen concentration.
One of the best things to eat in spring is leafy green vegetables-the foods most missing from the American diet! Among the many varieties are spinach, Swiss chard, kale, watercress, bok choy, mustard greens, collards, arugula, broccoli rabe, beet and dandelion greens.
All are densely packed with energy and nutrients, including calcium, magnesium, iron, potassium, phosphorus, zinc, folic acid, impressive amounts of vitamins A, C, E and K, and many other micronutrients.
They are also loaded with healthy fiber.
And they're tasty, too! Among the many benefits of eating greens are: purifying the blood, improved liver, gall bladder and kidney function, clearing congestion, boosting the immune system, improved circulation, improved mood, and clearer skin.
When shopping for greens, look for leaves that look and feel "perky" and alive, and stay away from anything that feels limp or wilted.
Check out your local farmers market to find seasonal, locally grown greens at their freshest.
Your local health food store or specialty food store will also have a wide variety of greens to choose from.
Why not try a new one every time you shop? Even if you've never learned to cook greens, it's easy to prepare these powerhouses of nutrition.
For starters, you can steam or sauté greens in a little olive oil, then experiment with adding other ingredients.
Many greens are also delicious eaten raw--either in a salad, mixed into a dip, or even made into a pesto sauce.
Enjoy!
