- 1). Check to make sure that your TV has an RGB or VGA input port. The only way to hook up a TV to a CQ56 is through a VGA cable as the laptop does not support HDMI or DVI cables. Consult your TV’s user manual or examine the input ports.
- 2). Purchase an external monitor male-to-male VGA cable. These can be purchased at most electronics stores as well as online through websites such as HP, Newegg.com, Amazon.com and eBay.
- 3). Purchase a standard 3.5 mm to 3.5 mm audio cable if you want to convey sound from the CQ56 to your TV’s speakers. The cable is optional as it is not required to display your CQ56’s screen on the TV, but it is necessary if you plan to play videos and other media that require sound on your TV through the CQ56. You can purchase this cable through most electronics stores and online.
- 4). Press the “Input” button on your TV or remote to change the input signal to the RGB or VGA port. Turn the volume on the TV to zero if you are planning on using the 3.5 mm cable to carry sound from the CQ56 to your TV.
- 5). Turn off the TV. Connect the VGA cable to the VGA input port on your TV. Connect the 3.5 mm cable to the audio input port next to the VGA port on the TV.
- 6). Turn the volume on your laptop to zero if you are planning on carrying the sound from the CQ56 to your TV as this will prevent damage to the TV or the laptop's sound card. Otherwise, leave the sound as it is.
- 7). Plug the other end of the VGA cable into the VGA output port on the side of your laptop. Plug the other end of the 3.5 mm cable into the headphone jack on the CQ56.
- 8). Turn on the TV and press the “Monitor/Projector” key on the top of your CQ56 laptop’s keyboard. Keep pressing the key until the computer’s screen displays on the TV to complete the process of connecting a TV to the CQ56.
