- 1). Put your contents into the envelope, place it face down in front of you with the flap of the envelope on the right side. Large envelopes have a flap that opens on the side rather than the top.
- 2). Look at the center most part of the envelope. This is where you will write the address the envelope is to be sent to. Make sure the writing is parallel to the right-hand edge of the envelope. In medium-sized, legible, script write the address in the following order line-by-line:
Recipient's Full Name
Street Address
City, State Zip Code
Make sure the left side of the address is lined up and flush, as show in the example. Also make sure that the bottom right part of the envelope is free of markings. The post office needs this blank to run the envelope through its coding machine. - 3). Write your return address in the top right-hand corner. The same stipulations apply as did in step 2. The example follows:
Sender's Name
Street Address
City, State Zip Code - 4). Seal the envelope. Take it to the post office to have it weighed for the proper amount of postage. Place all postage neatly in the upper right-hand corner of the envelope. Put the first stamp in the corner and any stamps that follow place directly to the left of the last one.
