- 1). Unplug the appliance that caused the blown fuse. Leaving the offending appliance plugged in often results in a surge which causes the new fuse to blow as well.
- 2). Take a flashlight with you and go to the fuse box for the home. Look at the floor below the fuse box to ensure there is no standing water, if your fuse box is in the basement. Place a board on the ground below the box if there is standing water so you have a dry surface to stand on.
- 3). Unclip the latch or locking clip on the side of the fuse box. Open the fuse box and turn off the main switch. The main switch is either an arm on the side of the box or a switch at the top of the fuse panel. Aim the beam of the flashlight at the fuse on the top left corner inside the fuse box.
- 4). Look at the glass end of the fuse that is now illuminated. See if the inside of the glass is clear or charred or blackened. If the glass is charred or blackened, you have found the blown fuse. If the glass is clear, proceed to inspect the fuse to the right of the one just inspected until you come to one that is not clear.
