How to Repair a Canon S1 IS Sensor

    • 1). Turn the camera on, activate and fire the flash, then quickly turn the camera off and remove the battery. Any digital camera with a built-in flash has an internal power capacitor that stores power for the flash. Coming into contact with this capacitor can cause a shock; but, by firing the flash at full power and then turning the camera off and removing the battery, you minimize the risk of shock. Still, always exercise caution when working inside the camera.

    • 2). Remove all the small screws on the sides and back of the camera. Once removed, you can use a butter knife or small screwdriver to pry the camera apart. As you remove the back of the camera, you will see a ribbon cable for the LCD (liquid crystal display) connecting the display to the circuit assembly. Carefully remove the cable from the circuit assembly. Set the back of the camera aside.

    • 3). Remove the small screws holding the circuit assembly in place and carefully pull the circuit assembly out of the front of the camera casing.

    • 4). Turn the circuit board assembly over and remove the screws holding the zoom lens. Carefully remove the lens from the circuit assembly. Behind the lens is the Canon S1 IS digital sensor. Other than cleaning or completely replacing the sensor, there are not a lot of other possible repairs you can do.

    • 5). Remove the small screws that are holding the sensor in place; follow the ribbon cable to its connection and carefully remove the sensor. The digital sensor and circuitry are all self-contained, making it easy to remove and replace. Only do this if you are replacing the sensor. If you are cleaning it, leave it attached to the camera and clean the sensor using a small sensor- cleaning brush.
