    Boy Scouts

    • One of the most well-known children's organizations in the nation, the Boy Scouts offers opportunities in NYC for boys and young men to meet and to develop positive social skills, while helping the community grow. As a Christian organization, the group encourages members to be "trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent."

Typically, members are required to perform certain public service and volunteer work while learning certain skills in order to advance. Members earn merit badges that allow them to progress until they reach Eagle Scout, the highest level of honor in the organization. This organization also teaches boys survival skills through camping excursions outside the city, making it a good fit for boys looking for a change of pace from city life. There are multiple boy scout chapters in NY, including one on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan.

    Girl Scouts

    • Similar to the Boy Scouts, the Girl Scouts of America is a youth organization exclusively for girls and young women. They are famous for the delicious-but-addicting cookies that members sell to raise money for local events. Even more important than cookies or fundraising, the Girl Scouts organizations seeks to "build girls of courage, confidence, and character" and to improve the state of the world.

The Girl Scouts have been encouraging girls to get involved in local communities since 1912. Offering field trips, community service projects and exchange programs, the Girl Scouts can be a great way for girls to meet others in the area and to develop lifelong social skills, while engaging in unique and exciting experiences they are unlikely to forget.
