People’s Misconception about the English Language

Learning to speak other languages means a big chance in that it exposes our learning abilities to different cultures. Thus, it enhances our understanding, and self-confidence as well. Although learning and understanding languages is not that easy, translation companies can provide help in converting texts and verbal language in a more visible way.

Some people, especially English native speakers or people who are fluent in the English language, often think that they do not need to learn foreign languages. This is because of the misconception of these people, knowing that English language is a universal language and thus thinking that learning other languages is not necessary. However, ever since humans have known how to talk and understand the existence of languages, people have realized the importance of languages. This is not referring alone to a main language, like the English language. I mean, yes, it is helpful to speak English, but hey c'mon, the majority of the people speaks non-English.

Learning languages makes people more comfortable and make your life easier in that it allows people to have accessible communication to other people that have different culture and traditions. Those who are lucky learning to speak other languages have a good potential of brain boosting.

I went to one of the banks here in China today and I noticed that I need to sign and fill in something but then all went pretty hilarious because the form was scripted completely in Chinese and all the bank staff cannot speak English. Well, there's nothing wrong with their language but the funny thing was that I felt like I was good for nothing, and speaking English was useless at that point. However, there were two local Chinese from our office, who helped to interpret all the questions, and the information from the bank and well; they even filled in my form. This really funny and yet annoying scenario made me think that English is important, but it will be useless if the people that you are speaking to cannot speak the language.

I am not saying that there is no point for people who have no knowledge about English to start learning English. And I am not saying either that English speakers should ignore learning other foreign languages. What I am saying is that learning English is good but not enough! However, learning different languages is a big factor in effective communication.

Yes, indeed it is true that English is the universal language; however, learning foreign languages is ideal for any purposes. What I just experienced today, though was that I spoke using the universal language, but it was still useless for communication. One of the reasons why some people do not bother learning English is because they have higher priorities in saving and preserving their culture, heritage and thus, language as well. In addition, that is the reason as well why English speakers do not put a lot of effort into learning other languages. I guess, ignorance plays a part as well.

To sum up, the English language is important, but to be able to speak to somebody in his language is more important and highly appreciated by the person who speaks the language natively.
