- 1). Place new batteries in your UV meter, using the size required by the manufacturer.
- 2). Hold your UV meter in your hand (or hold up your wrist, if it is a watch-type UV meter), and aim it toward the brightest source of light. Press the button on your meter to produce the UV reading (this button will vary by manufacturer), and note the reading given by the machine.
- 3). Test your UV meter to verify it is accurate. It should record a reading higher than zero in each of these conditions: outdoors in shade; indoors next to a window, tinted or not, in daylight; outdoors on a completely cloudy day; outdoors near sunrise or sunset; and within a few feet of a fluorescent lamp.
