After waiting through the after holiday dry spell we were finally provided with some great new films debuting for the Martin Luther King Jr.
holiday weekend.
While there were some great films introduced over the holiday weeks those films have run their course and it was time for some fresh new content and we got it.
Check out the top performing movies at the box office for the weekend of January 16th, 2011.
The Green Hornet starring Seth Rogen, Jay Chou and Christopher Waltz grabbed the number one spot at the box office this weekend.
The film, which is based on the 1966 superhero, brought in a cool $34 million for its debut weekend.
The movie, which was directed by Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Be Kind Rewind) really did a great job sticking with the original themes and character.
Seth Rogen who has made quite a name for himself in the film business both wrote and starred in The Green Hornet.
Check out this film if you are in the mood for a fun superhero thriller.
Coming in second for the weekend was The Dilemma starring Vince Vaughn and Kevin James.
The Dilemma, which was also in its debut weekend, brought in $17.
4 million but many of the reviews on this film are mixed.
The Dilemma is directed by the talented Ron Howard (The Da Vinci Code, Cinderella Man and A Beautiful Mind) who has not directed a great deal in the genre of comedy films.
If you are in the mood for some great physical comedy The Dilemma is a great one to see.
Showing no signs of letting up in its fourth week at the box office, True Grit grabbed the third position for the weekend.
The Coen Brothers must be pleased with the amazing success of their highest grossing movie as it added another $9 million bringing the four week total to $126.
4 million.
True Grit stars Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon and has generated quite a buzz among moviegoers.
Look for continued success from this one as the word of mouth is quite good on this action film.
