Johnny Depp has been entertaining the world via the big screen and cable/satellite TV for decades. It is amazing to think that Depp actually moved to Los Angeles with dreams of becoming a rock God. However, after a suggestion by friend and fellow movie star Nicholas Cage, Depp left his band to pursue acting. And as history has shown it was a good move. Depp is widely regarded by most Hollywood critics as one of the best and most versatile actors to ever grace the big screen. He has several terrific performances playing pretty much every role out there; however, it is his fantastic performances in his character roles that we will all remember for years to come. The best character performances by Depp came in one of the first movies of his career "Edward Scissorhands" and in the cult classic "Ed Wood".
Director Tim Burton's "Edward Scissorhands" was one of the first major movie roles of Johnny Depp's career and in many ways helped really shape and define Depp's career. He basically showed Hollywood from the beginning that he was only willing to work on projects that he was passionate about, circumventing the normal movie star process. This movie also established Depp as a force to be reckoned with. It also started a friendship between Tim Burton and Johnny Depp that has resulted in several collaborations including "Sweeney Todd" and "Alice in Wonderland". "Edward Scissorhands" is the story of a young man, played by Johnny Depp, who was born with scissors as his appendages instead of hands. He is subsequently discovered by a traveling makeup saleswoman who decides to take him home with her. The young man has a tough time adjusting at first but eventually finds his place in the town as an up and coming hair stylist, which comes quite naturally due to his handicap. However, it only takes one mistake to turn the town against a stranger and Edward learns that the hard way. "Edward Scissorhands" is a terrific movie and possibly the best of the collaborative works of Tim Burton and Johnny Depp. Depp delivers a fantastic performance as young Edward and really shows a side of humanity that we can all relate to.
"Ed Wood" was not initially a box office hit, quite possibly due to skeptical audiences who could not wrap their minds around the strange plot of the movie. However, the movie overall is completely brilliant, due in large part to Johnny Depp's portrayal of Ed Wood, often thought of as the worst director in Hollywood history. The movie is about Wood's final shot at stardom. He lands Bela Lugosi, the then aging star of the "Dracula" movies. Wood believes through Lugosi, he will be able to create a movie that will actually get positive feedback. Depp plays the eccentric, cross-dressing director fantastically and deserved much more acclaim than he received. Martin Landau also does a terrific job playing the late great Bela Lugosi, nailing the accent beautifully.
These two movies are no doubt must see Johnny Depp movies. The performances turned in by Depp are by themselves worth of rental. In addition, watch for these movies on your cable or satellite TVs so you don't miss out.
