Ten romantic things to do in Europe

Forget the obvious. If you want to do something romantic and special with your sweetheart, do something that's a little bit off the radar. We all know couples who visit the Eiffel Tower to declare their undying love for each other or who propose whilst being taken on a gondola ride in Venice but there are other romantic things you can do that will equally send the heart racing.  Being romantic is not just reserved for special occasions – Valentine's Day, birthdays or anniversaries; it is spontaneously welcomed at any time.  Ask any woman and she'll agree. The place itself doesn't necessary have to be known for being romantic but the fact you're in love and together will make it feel romantic.

Consider these options:

Verona – One of the most visited places in Verona is the Casa di Guilietta – Juliet's House. It is believed to be the setting for Shakespeare's great play Romeo and Juliet. Here couples can stand on the balcony and re-enact the famous love scene and have a lot of fun in the process.  A bronze statue of Juliet is located in the courtyard where legend has it that if a person strokes her right breast then they will have good luck. Many people also write their name and the name of their beloved on the wall to the entrance of the house. This is known as Juliet's wall.

Paris – No trip to Paris is complete until you visit the Palace of Versailles, home to the late Marie Antoinette and King Louis XVI.  While there why not hire a bicycle and cycle through the immense palace grounds. They are spectacular and riding together is very romantic.

Munich – Lock your hearts together and throw away the key.  It has become a tradition for lovers to engrave their names onto a padlock and then attach it to one of the bridges along the Isar River. By throwing away the key into the river below, the sweethearts are sealing their love forever.

Prague – Whilst strolling along the Charles Bridge why not stop and have your portrait drawn by one of the local sketch artists.  It makes for a great keepsake.

Tuscany – Enjoy the beauty of the Tuscan countryside together from above by taking a hot air balloon ride.

Venice – Dress up like you've never done before and attend the Gran Ballo della Cavalchina.  The masquerade ball is held every year during the Carnival of Venice. The carnival starts 40 days before Easter and ends on Shrove Tuesday.

Tallinn – If you want to escape the hustle and bustle and be in a place where everyone minds their own business, Tallinn is the city for you. The Gothic architecture of the Old Town will enchant you while romantic pamper packages for couples are available at most hotels. And if you are after real isolation, consider visiting one of Estonia's islands – there are over 1500 from which to choose!

Vienna – After a romantic dinner why not take a horse and carriage ride. Everything seems more romantic at night!

Moscow – Russia is home to the matryoshka doll and some artists do take personalised orders. For a unique and lasting gift why not get a doll painted in your likeness or even better, get a custom made doll of your entire family. It may take a few weeks to receive it but it would definitely be worth the wait!

Lucerne – We all know Switzerland has an abundance of natural beauty and picturesque scenery but Lucerne is definitely one of those places that truly has a romantic feel to it. Couples can enjoy strolling along the lake or taking in the history of Chapel Bridge whilst being surrounded by the Alps and Mount Pilatus.

And for those who want to do something romantic with their sweetheart but don't necessarily have the cash to do so, don't forget it's always fun to pop into one of those instant photo booths located at transport stations.  Doing some fun and loving poses together and then keeping those images in your wallet is a great way to cherish those memories for the years to come.
