- Practice-based doctorate programs provide nurses with advanced knowledge and clinical skills. These skills are usually in a particular area of clinical specialty which promotes better patient outcomes. Advanced knowledge also improves a nurse's ability to communicate effectively with other health care professionals with clinical doctorate degrees, and the title may produce a higher level of respect.
- A DNP degree is preferred for nurses who wish to be in executive leadership positions. These positions include health care administration, nursing supervision, advocacy, policy development and current practice assessment. A DNP in management may be responsible for quality assessments and improvement programs. In addition, a DNP may be involved in the financial aspect of health care management and be responsible for improving cost effectiveness.
- Although most universities require full-time professors to have research-based doctorate degrees (Ph.D.) in addition to advanced clinical education, a DNP degree may provide a nurse with the opportunity to work in the academic setting as an adjunct professor. A DNP is considered to be an expert in his or her area to practice, which may enable a nurse to teach continuing education courses to other nurses and health care professionals.
