- 1). Identify that you have boot block malware. You will know if you have boot block (or boot sector) malware if cannot start up your operating system or if it does start, but you cannot find your data or devices.
- 2). Put your CD into the CD drive. You may have to turn on your computer to get the CD drive open. If this happens, shut off your computer after the drive has opened and the CD has been inserted.
- 3). Turn on your computer and watch the screen. If you see a prompt asking you to press a key to boot from the CD, follow the instructions. The CD will boot up and a blue Windows screen will appear.
- 4). Choose the option to repair your computer by pressing the letter "R." The Windows directory will appear. Most likely it will show "C:\Windows" as the site of your Windows installation and it will be listed as number 1.
- 5). Press 1 to choose the site of your Windows installation directory.
- 6). Type in your administrator password if you have one. Most of the time, no Windows password is necessary. Press the "Enter" key.
- 7). Type in fixmbr. Your screen should should this line: C:\WINDOWS>fixmbr. Press the "Enter" key.
- 8). Ignore the warning about changing your Master Boot Record (the MBR) by pressing the letter "Y" and the "Enter" key. Within seconds, you will get a message that the MBR has been changed.
- 9). Restart your computer.
