Above The Chatter

I was listening to the Dan Patrick show on Fox Sport Radio as he was interviewing Indy Car Driver Danica Patrick. He asked the open wheel car veteran if she would use performance enhancing drugs if she knew there would be no repercussions legally. She failed to give him a yes or no answer and based on her response, I felt she really didn’t have a problem with it.

Let’s face the facts, everyone that has any type of drive or competitive nature is always looking for an edge to win or be the best. I don’t care if it’s baseball, football, or business in general. Success is what we are judged on. If you toil endlessly in a factory setting making widgets or endure the extreme pressure of closing deal, you are judged. You are judged by where you live or by the make of automobile you drive.

Professional sports players are no different than the highly driven executive types that strive for fame and or fortune. They must find an edge to compete with others whom are the best in the world at what they do. Most football, basketball, and baseball players careers are limited at best. They must fulfill the expectations of the team owners, coaches, and last but not least, us, the fickle uncaring fan that wants to send them packing as soon as they lose a step.

We as fans watch the players every chance we get on TV or radio or watch TV online. Yes we are the final judge, you and me. We make our decision to either pay to watch or not. When we stop paying, the player after a while in sent to less competitive pastures to live out his days in memories of days gone by. I care about sports. I care about football, hockey, and soccer. I also have to ask myself, why are Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens not facing charges for drug abuse, but facing real prison time for prevarications issued to congressional committees. Professional sports in general have left the world of real things and make little if no sense.

I also have to wonder why is congress spending our tax money to determine rights and wrongs within an entertainment industry. I’m not trying to justify juiced players. I care about football, hockey, and even soccer, yes soccer. I ’m just not sure anyone really cares about us, the real fan.
