- Total system recovery is a permanent process that can't be undone. All personal data, applications and settings will be removed leaving your computer with the factory image installed. Due to the severity of the consequences, this should only be done as a last effort. If a system error is keeping you from even booting Windows, or your computer is so bogged down as to be unusable you should still try anything else you can think of before running a system recovery.
- The Toshiba Satellite brand of laptops all come with a recovery partition installed on the hard drive. This partition contains everything that was installed by the factory including data, application installers, drivers and likely some junk you won't want. This data is segregated from the data of your active partition, typically the C drive, which holds your operating system data. You should never alter the data on this partition as it will negate your ability to recover your hard drive in an emergency.
- Turn off your Toshiba Satellite laptop. Hold "0" and press the power button to turn the system on and launch the Toshiba HDD Recovery Utility. Press "1" to select "Restore Original Factory Image." Click "Yes" to begin the process of restoring your drive. Press any key when the recovery is complete to restart your computer. When the system reboots it will be just like it was new.
- In the unlikely event that the recovery fails due to an issue with the recovery partition, recovery discs can be purchased from Toshiba. Call their customer service line to request the discs for your model of laptop. Toshiba also has a backup disc creation utility installed on the Satellite laptop that can be used before a disaster to create your own recovery discs.
