- 1). Start a 1 or 2 player game from the main menu. In 2 player games, each player will take a turn completing a level. The cycle repeats until the game is completed or a player has lost all lives.
- 2). Select the world and level you want to play from the world map. Navigate the miniature Mario icon to the level you want to play. Each level is listed as "Level 1," "Level 2" and so on. In some worlds, you will not be required to go in the order listed.
- 3). Control Mario (or Luigi) using the directional pad and face buttons on your controller. Although the name of the buttons vary depending on which console you're playing the game on, the "Jump" button can be used to jump, fly and break objects. The "Action" buttons can use to sprint, pick up objects and shoot fireballs.
- 4). Collect coins and items by running Mario over them. Collecting coins will earn you a bigger score and addition lives. Notable items include the Fire Flower that can be used to shoot fireballs at enemies and the Hammer Suit that can be used to throw hammers and makes Mario invincible to incoming projectiles.
- 5). Dodge enemy attacks by figuring out attack patterns. Attack them by either jumping on them or shooting them with a fireball.
- 6). Finish world eight (the final world) by entering Bowser's Castle on the world map. After a few rides on donut lifts and some minor enemy encounters, you will encounter Bowser. He will attack you with flames while moving across the lava lake. Jump to dodge them and keep it up until you've cleared the lake. The final Bowser battle will take place on ground. If you still have the Hammer Suit, hammers are most effective against Bowser, requiring only three direct hits to take him out. If you still have the Fire Flower, it will take 35 fireballs to take him out.
