- 1). Determine a spot to place your VoIP adapter and look for another spot where you want your telephone to be installed.
- 2). Mount an RJ-14 telephone jack on the wall closest to where you plan to sit the VoIP adapter, using screws supplied with the jack. A VoIP adapter is needed to convert analog signals used by regular phones into digital signals that can travel through the Internet. Attach another RJ-14 telephone jack to the wall closest to where you wish to place the telephone. Bear in mind that the VoIP adapter has to be placed within reach of an electrical receptacle or an electrical extension cord.
- 3). Remove 2 inches of cable sheath from the tip of a CAT-6 cable to access its inner wires, using diagonal pliers. Strip off 1/2 inch from the plastic insulation of the blue wire with white stripes and 1/2 inch from the white wire with blue stripes, using a wire stripper.
- 4). Wrap the blue wire with white stripes clockwise around the red terminal screw on the jack near to where you will place the VoIP adapter and wrap the white wire with blue stripes around the green terminal screw. Turn the screws clockwise, using a screwdriver to tighten and secure the connections.
- 5). Look for an accessible route and run the cable up to the other jack. Choose the shortest path, but least visible and fasten the cable using cable staples. Strip off 2 inches from the cable's outer cover at the end of the line, using diagonal pliers. Strip off 1/2 inch of insulation at the tip of the blue wire with white stripes and 1/2 inch from the white wire with blue stripes, using a wire stripper.
- 6). Wrap the blue wire with white stripes clockwise around the red terminal screw on the jack and wrap the white wire with blue stripes clockwise around the green terminal screw. Turn the terminal screws clockwise, using a screwdriver, to secure the connections.
- 7). Connect one end of the patch cord supplied with the VoIP adapter into RJ-14 jack on your wall and connect the other end into the jack behind the VoIP adapter. Connect your DSL modem into the port behind your VoIP adapter using the Ethernet cable supplied with the modem. Connect the DSL cable from the phone company into the DSL port behind your modem.
- 8). Plug a telephone into the other jack, turn on the modem and the VoIP adapter and lift your telephone handset to check for dial tone. Call someone to test the line.
