- 1). Cut six strips of fabric 1 inch wide and 1 1/2 yards long. Choose a brown flannel fabric for a soft bullwhip with an authentic look.
- 2). Align the strips of fabric on top of each other. Sew across one end of the fabric strips with a sewing machine to hold the strips together.
- 3). Tape the stack of strips to a table with packaging tape along the sewn end to secure the bullwhip while you braid it.
- 4). Braid the strips of fabric by doubling them up so you have three lengths of flannel. Make the braiding secure but not too tight. Stop the braiding 3 inches from the end of the loose strips.
- 5). Sew at the end of the braid to secure the braiding, creating the whipping end of your bullwhip.
- 6). Loop the top end of your braid to create a handle. Secure the loop by tacking it down with needle and thread.
- 7). Cut a 4-inch-by-5-inch rectangle of flannel fabric for the handle.
- 8). Fold under 1/2 an inch along the top and bottom of the 4-inch sides. Stitch along the folds with a sewing machine, making hems.
- 9). Fold the fabric rectangle around the handle end of the whip, covering the tacked edge of the loop.
- 10
Stitch through the folded rectangle close to the braid. - 11
Trim excess fabric edges with pinking shears to prevent raveling of the fabric. - 12
Tack the top and bottom ends of the handle to the body of the whip so it doesn't slip during use.
