Shadow People and Protective Light

I live in Linwood, Scotland. One night when I was about 8 years old (late 1978 or early 1979), I went to bed as normal. I fell asleep as usual, but at some point during the night I woke up instantly alert.

At the bottom of my bed was the shadow of a man walking back and forth across the foot of my bed. I looked at him, then looked over to the right, where my wardrobe was, and there was a group of shadowy people kind of standing there.

I looked again at the one at the bottom of my bed and asked, "Dad? Is that you?"

At this point, the shadow turned toward me, leaned on the foot of my mattress (I saw the mattress go down where he leaned on it) and said, "Ah, we've been waiting on you waking up." I screamed and that's the last I remember.

In the morning, my mum said to me that I must have had a nightmare during the night because I'd woken her and my dad with my scream, but when they'd come running through, I was fast asleep. That creeped me out because I know I had woken up, but at the same time I did wonder if it was a vivid dream.

That night when I went to bed, I was really scared. I had told my mum what happened, but she just kept saying it was a dream. I went to bed and lay in the dark for ages when I became aware of a soft light behind me. (I was lying on my left hand side.) I rolled over to my right and saw something that was amazing.

There, beside my bed at pillow height was what I can only describe as a column or pillar of golden light.

It went from floor to ceiling, about a foot across in width and was the golden-white-yellow colour you see in a really hot coal furnace. The light itself looked liked it was both moving up and down and spiraling both ways round and round without the main column moving. It also looked like there were sparkles all through it (like the way bubbles pop at the top of Coke when you pour it). That's the best I can describe it.

I lay there looking at it for I don't know how long. I felt peace. I just know I wasn't scared anymore. I didn't hear a sound and I didn't say a word. After a while, I just rolled over and went back to sleep and I wasn't scared to go to bed anymore.

By rights, I should have been yelling for my folks at the top of my lungs, but it didn't even cross my mind at the time. I believe I saw my guardian angel that night.
