- 1). Turn off the circuit breaker that provides power to the room with the ceiling fan. Never work with electricity until you are certain the power is off.
- 2). Remove all ornamental accessories from the ceiling fan. This includes bulbs, light coverings and any other decorations.
- 3). Remove the screws holding the light box to the unit, using a Philips-head screwdriver. Place the screws someplace safe as you'll need them to resecure the light box once the pull chain has been replaced.
- 4). Remove the end cap, which is the circular section where the pull chain originates from. Turn the end cap counterclockwise to loosen and pull it off over the pull chain. Locate the wires under the end cap connecting the pull chain switch to the fan. Disconnect the wires by hand and remove the switch.
- 5). Place a new switch into the light box and screw the end cap back on by hand to hold it securely in place.
- 6). Reconnect the wires by hand, connecting the switch black wire to the light box black wire. The remaining switch wire is the ground and can be connected to any available light box wire.
- 7). Push the wire bundle neatly into the fan and reattach the light box with Phillips screwdriver and the three screws you set aside.
- 8). Reattach all ornamental features and light bulbs. Turn the circuit breaker back on and test the new pull chain.
