Area Rug Etiquette

    Entry Ways

    • Small scatter rugs and runners are often found in entry ways. Whether gracing a foyer just inside the front or back door, or an entry way that leads from another portion of your home, they designate area and serve as pathways. Always bear in mind that area rugs in these locations will receive lots of traffic and will frequently become soiled from outdoor traffic, especially during times of inclement weather. Choose these rugs in inexpensive versions so replacing won't be an issue, or buy some that can easily be washed as needed.

    Bed & Bath

    • If you have hardwood or even linoleum floors, it's proper etiquette to provide the warmth and comfort of area rugs for stepping on when getting out of bed and out of the bathtub. These rugs need not be large and they need not be fancy. They should blend nicely with each room's decor, and provide ample room for standing and dressing or slipping on some shoes. The bathroom rug should be a washable version, as this will need to be laundered on a weekly basis in most situations.

    Living Rooms & Family Rooms

    • Larger area rugs are perfect for areas where your family and guests tend to congregate. In addition to providing clean, soft and warm places to sit if people wish to sit on the floor, they also provide noise reduction in high traffic areas within your home. Larger area rugs should have pads underneath to provide extra cushioning and to help stabilize the rug so it doesn't slip and slide across the room.

Larger area rugs also designate specific areas within your home. One rug that complements the living room furniture will designate that area while another laid under the dining room table will designate an entirely different space, even if both spaces happen to be in the same room.

Style and comfort are key when using area rugs. Care for them is simple. Simply wash or dry clean them per manufacturer's instructions and vacuum away dirt, dust and debris as needed.
