It can be quite unnerving to see your pet succumb to canine seizures.
Sadly though, this illness affects dogs too as much as it affects humans.
There are different types of canine seizures and it is important to be aware of them especially if you suspect that your dog is afflicted with epilepsy.
Among these types is the generalized seizure which is also known to be Tonic Clonic.
What happens here is that the dog would automatically lose his balance and then extend his limbs afterwards.
This initial phase is what the "tonic" name is for.
The second phase comes after around half a minute and is known as "clonic" where the dog seems to be running in place.
Another type is known as the Petit Mal seizure.
This is known to occur rarely among dogs but is known to happen as the dog's eyes eventually move upward and rotates.
The dog can also become briefly unconscious because of this case.
Partial seizures are also known to happen among dogs.
In here, there's just a portion of the dog which gets to experience the seizure.
It can be a bit hard to notice because it occurs like spasms do like for a single lib.
You will know that this is happening if your dog suddenly exhibits muscle contractions.
Then there are also those known as complex partial seizures wherein complex behavioral traits can also be observed.
Because of the seizures, other weight behaviors can eventually be displayed by the dog.
Among these uncommon activities or behavior can be running hysterically or biting their limbs.
This is a reaction that dogs try to do in an attempt perhaps to stop the seizures or because it gives them discomfort.
Among the types of seizures that can get really scary for pet owners is the one known as status epilepticus.
This is known to occur for over five minutes or even half an hour in length.
This can be life threatening so the owner must be really observant of the pet and must follow the medications strictly.
Cluster seizures can also last for a longer period of time, but this is because different seizures occur at different parts of the dog's body.
This is why it can be sometimes confused with status epilepticus.
Because of the different types of canine seizures that can happen, it becomes important now to consult the experts when it comes to these things.
Never self medicate and if you suspect your pet to be suffering from this, consult the vet immediately so that tests can be done to determine what's happening.
