Nitric Oxide Supplements - From Toxic Gas to Bodybuilding Supplement

The history of nitric oxide is pretty interesting.  It was discovered in 1772 by a chemist named Joseph Priestly.  At that time, it was called "nitrous air" and was considered nothing more than a colorless and toxic gas.

Nobel Price namesake, Alfred Nobel, actually made his fortune by producing and selling nitroglycerin (dynamite).  It wasn't until near the end of his life that they discovered nitroglycerin was beneficial in treating heart conditions because it releases NO gas which dilates blood vessels in the heart, and reduces pain and pressure in the chest.  He refused to take it.

In the 1980's it was discovered that nitric oxide was actually produced by the human body.  In 1992 this gas was awarded the "molecule of the year" award by Science Magazine.  In 1998, the Nobel Prize for Medicine and Physiology was awarded to two scientists who discovered that nitric oxide is a "signaling molecule " that is critical in cellular communication.

So What is Nitric Oxide?

Nitric Oxide (NO) is a gas which performs as a neurotransmitter prompting the body to expand its blood vessels.  It's found in the human body and it is critical to the control of blood circulation because it regulates blood flow, blood clotting and blood vessel diameter.  It has also been claimed that nitric oxide does the following:

•    Improves memory
•    Improves ability to learn
•    Fights off infections
•    Reduces tumor growth
•    Sleep regulation
•    Lowers blood pressure
•    Increases blood flow to organs and muscles

When NO expands the blood vessels, more blood is moving through them, of course.  In a bodybuilding environment, this means that more blood is flowing to the muscles so you get superior oxygen delivery, muscle velocity, strength, and ultimately more muscle growth.   Many bodybuilders use nitric oxide supplements because they say it helps with recovery and stamina, as well as pumping up the muscles.  Some of the NO supplements have a perpetual release formula that releases the NO in a more continual basis instead of just one quick release after taking it.

As far as safety, it can be very dangerous to those with low blood pressure.  Even though it's a substance found in the body naturally, too much of it can be a problem.  As with any OTC supplement, you should check with your doctor to ensure there are no underlying conditions that will be affected by taking nitric oxide supplements.  If you're taking nitric oxide supplements and you find that you're dizzy or lightheaded, make sure you sit down before you pass out.  If you're unsure about the amount you should take, always start with a little and add more when you are able to.
