How to Replace Ballasts in Shop Lights

    • 1). Shut off the power to the fixture. If it is a plug-in type fixture, disconnect the plug from the outlet.

    • 2). Mount the step stool or ladder and carefully remove the fluorescent tubes. Set them aside. If it is practical to do so, lower the fixture and place it on a workbench.

    • 3). Using the screwdriver, remove the front cover on the fixture. It is usually held in place by two screws.

    • 4). Untwist the wire nuts connecting the ballast wires from the wires leading to the light sockets. Set the wire nuts aside. Disconnect the green grounding wire.

    • 5). Remove the old ballast and install the replacement. Most are held in place by several short screws. (Feel free to reuse the screws.)

    • 6). Using the utility knife, strip the insulation from the ends of the wires leading from the ballast. If the wire leads have been pre-cut, simply remove the plastic insulation and discard it.

    • 7). Using the wire nuts, connect the like colored wires together, such as yellow to yellow, blue to blue, etc. Using the screwdriver, attach the green grounding wire to the green grounding screw.

    • 8). Reinstall the cover, and return the fixture to its original location. Reinstall the fluorescent tubes into their respective sockets.

    • 9). Restore power to the fixture and switch it on. The bulbs should illuminate fully and the buzzing sound will be gone.
