      The University of Kentucky, in Lexington, Kentucky, is a leader in equine research. The College of Agriculture, Department of Animal and Food Sciences offers two bachelor's degrees. The B.S. in animal science prepares the student who wants to develop an understanding of equine biology and management. The B.S. in equine science and management concentrates on the business side of the horse industry. UK offers numerous animal science courses such as animal genetics, and animal nutrition and feeding. The University of Kentucky trains graduate students in equine research, with M.S. and Ph.D. programs. Graduate study focuses on research and students in these programs complete a research paper and a thesis.

    Midway College

    • Midway College, Kentucky's women's college, is in Midway, Kentucky. It concentrates on liberal arts and career studies. Formerly the Disciples of Christ's Kentucky Female Orphan School, it has a tradition of providing formal education to girls when women received little schooling. The equine studies program offers the certificate in applied equine studies, a minor in equine studies, an A.A. in equine studies with a concentration in applied equine management, a B.A in equine studies with a concentration in applied equine management, and a B.S. in equine studies with a concentration in health and rehabilitation.

    Murray State University

    • Murray State University in Murray, Kentucky, originated as Murray Training School in 1924. Murray State's School of Agriculture's degree options include animal/equine science and animal health technology/pre-veterinary medicine. The school has three farm laboratories close to the campus. Murray State offers B.S. and A.S. degrees. A minor in equine science is also available. Practical experience is obtained through laboratories and summer internships. Students may bring their horses to Murray State, which has extensive equine facilities. Students train young horses and participate in the school's in-house breeding program.

    Morehead State University

    • Morehead State University is in Morehead in the Daniel Boone National Forest in Rowan County, Kentucky. College classes are available in at least eight locations and there are some distance learning classes. Morehead and NASA built a space tracking system on campus. Morehead is one of only five American universities to offer a space science degree. It has 76 undergraduate degree programs including a B.S. degree in agricultural sciences with an equine science option. The classes available include introduction to animal science and equine health and disease.

    Asbury University

    • Asbury University in Wilmore, Kentucky, is a Christian liberal arts university in the Wesleyan-Holiness tradition. It was founded in 1890 by a minister and has a strong spiritual emphasis. The Health, Physical Education and Recreation Department offers a major in equine management, or hippotherapy. Since 2001, Asbury has participated in the National Police Horse Colloquium at the Kentucky Horse Park. The geldings are trained by university students for three or four years, and then are sold to police for mounted officers. Asbury is the only American university with a training program administered by students.
