- 1). Turn the light switch off and remove the bulb from the socket carefully. Place the bulb in a box carefully. Store the box in an area where the bulbs cannot be easily broken until you are ready to dispose of them.
- 2). Contact your city waste collection services. Some cities and counties have a waste collection program for potentially hazardous items, like incandescent light bulbs, pesticides and paint. The service is usually free, but some programs may require a small fee. The service may be available year round or a few times a year.
- 3). Contact local retailers. Some retailers, like Lowe's and Home Depot, offer in-store recycling programs.
- 4). Check with the manufacturer. Some manufacturers accept used bulbs and provide kits for users to mail the bulbs back.
- 5). Search for a recycling center in your area that accepts light bulbs. Earth 911 provides a searchable database of recycling centers across the nation.
