How to Make a Star Kite

    Build the Frame

    • 1). Cut a notch into one end of each of two dowels, using your saw. Cut a notch into both ends of the third dowel.

    • 2). Place the first two of the dowels on a table. Cross them at one end to form the topmost point of the five-point star. Spread the dowels to create an inverted V with legs 16 inches apart at the bottom. Glue the dowels together where they join at the top and lash them with a length of twine to secure them. Put a drop of glue on the lashing to secure it.

    • 3). Measure 16 inches from the bottom of each leg of the V and mark the dowel. Measure 19 inches from each end of the third dowel and mark it in each location. Place the third dowel horizontally across the V, matching the marks on the cross dowel with those on the V. Glue and lash together.

    • 4). Tie a knot in one end of a 30-inch length of twine. Insert the string into the notched dowel of the arms of the star. Stretch the string across to the notch in the furthest leg of the star. Slide the string into the notch and tie a knot, keeping it taut. Secure with glue. Repeat on the other side.

    Cover the Kite

    • 1). Cut the covering material around the frame at least 1 inch from the edge. Cut about 1 inch off of each point.

    • 2). Cut a slit in the paper at each of the obtuse angles of the frame.

    • 3). Fold the edges of the sail over the frame and use tape or glue stick to adhere the fold to the sail. Do not glue the covering directly to the frame.

Attach the Tail and the Bridle

    • 1). Attach a 33-inch piece of kite line at the top of the kite and at one of the points on the bottom. Attach a second 33-inch kite line from the top to the other bottom point. Attach a 12-inch length of kite line to the two strings you just put on, tying them together with a bowline knot at a point just above the star's cross piece.

    • 2). Attach an 18-inch string across the bottom two legs of the star. Attach the tail to the string on the bottom of the kite using twine.

    • 3). Attach the tail to the string on the bottom of the kite using twine.
