I wasn't going to review this movie on here, but there is so much I wanted to talk about, I couldn't fit it all on my Rotten Tomatoes review.
To start off, I did enjoy this movie.
It did what it set out to do, which was to re-introduce Oz to a new generation.
I thought it was a fun movie that had its moments of greatness, but there's so much I thought needed work as well and that's what I want to talk about.
First, the acting.
James Franco is good for the most part in this movie.
He had good chemistry with his CGI partners and Michelle Williams.
But Franco and Mila Kunis were pretty cringe worthy.
It felt like they weren't acting at all and they just didn't work well together and its because of Kunis.
She was below average in this.
Michelle Williams does the best she can and ends up being one of my favorite things about this movie.
Everyone else gives okay performances.
Another problem I have with Oz, is that Francos character adjusts way to quickly to being in a whole new world and it isn't believable at all.
He doesn't even question where he is at or what all these creatures are.
It isn't that big of a deal, but for some reason it bothers me a lot.
Franco looks surprised that he's in a new world for about one minuted, then he's back to normal.
Oz the Great and Powerful is two hours and ten minutes, which isn't that long of a movie.
But the movie has a lot of down time in it and ends up dragging.
They could of made it a bit shorter and it could of been the perfect length.
My biggest problem in this movie is Mila Kunis though.
She was set up for failure and clearly didn't have the acting skills to do what she needed to.
Her whole character arc was rushed and the reason why she became the Wicked Witch of the West was told in about three minutes.
Kunis was doomed the day she was casted.
It gets even worse after she turns into the Witch.
She tries to mimic the original performance and it ends up being a disaster.
Overall this is a great looking movie that tells a story about fraud and becoming great.
Its themes are clear throughout and was fun to see play out.
The final act is the best part of the movie and seemed truly magical.
Even if there are some pretty big problems with the film, most of them can be over looked.
But they do stop Oz the Great and Powerful from being a truly great movie and sadly it doesn't live up to all of its potential.
Final Score: 7.
