- 1). Bend your knees in a squat position. Keep your back straight and your arms extended outward. Maintain that position and start shuffling your feet laterally from the left side of the 3-point line to the right side. Do this as fast and intense as possible. This will not only make you a tougher defender but one who will be intimidating to play against.
- 2). Imagine your opponent attempting to drive to the basket, and adjust your defensive position by moving at an angle, but continuing to do so laterally. In other words, always impede your opponent's progress to the basket by cutting him off, but never move your feet backward or forward, always side to side.
- 3). Hold on to the basketball at the top of the 3-point line. Practice the quickness of your first step around your opponent, or visualize an opponent guarding you. When driving to the right side, your first step should be with your right foot, and vice versa on the left side. This allows you to guard the ball with your inside shoulder and inside leg, away from your dribbling hand.
- 4). Pick certain spots on the court where you feel most comfortable with shooting and driving. Keep your body constantly in motion by making head fakes and shot fakes in those specific areas. Always use this tactic as a key to getting your opponent flat-footed or guessing so that you can shoot or drive in your comfort zones much more easily.
