New Horror Releases in Theaters and on DVD: Week of March 23, 2008

The Living and the Dead

In this acclaimed British thriller, an unstable man-child determined to take care of his bed-ridden mother when his father goes out of town stops taking his meds and spirals into delusion.

Lost Highway

Ever-perplexing director David Lynch brings us this tale that begins with the creepy premise -- later used in the film Caché -- of a family who receives mysterious video tapes of their own home and then diverges into a surreal series of images and identity-swapping plot twists.

The Mist

Based on the Stephen King novel, a mysterious fog bank envelops a small Maine town, bringing with it a variety of mysterious creatures and a twist ending.

Shrooms

A group of American college students visiting Ireland to sample some "magic mushrooms" in the woods fall under attack from vicious creatures -- but are they real or just 'shroom-induced hallucinations? Whatever the case, you can be sure that the phrase "Dude" will be used more than once.

The Sister of Ursula

Think you've seen it all when it comes to Italian giallo cinema? Wait 'til you see the mystery killer in this film attacking people with a, um, sexual device. Or don't. Really, you don't have to.

Socket

In this gay-themed thriller, a man who's struck by lightning becomes involved with a secretive group that gains sexual gratification through electrocution. Socket to me!

SS Hell Pack

This triple feature explores the curious exploitation sub-genre of SS films that blend eroticism with torture in a Nazi concentration camp setting. Included are: SS Girls, SS Experiment Love Camp and SS Camp Woman's Hell.

Terror in the Pharaoh's Tomb

This unusual modern production emulates the horror and adventure tales of the '30s and '40s by using period costumes, filming in black and white and splicing in footage from classic horror legends Bela Lugosi, Lon Chaney, Jr. and Peter Lorre.

Them

One of the most acclaimed horror films of the past few years, this French production features a couple staying in an isolated mansion awakened one night to find themselves surrounded by strangers with bad intentions. Them earned directors David Moreau and Xavier Palud the job of helming the American remake of The Eye.

The Torture Chamber of Dr. Sadism / Death Smiles on a Murderer

Two twisted films starring two creepy icons: in The Torture Chamber of Dr. Sadism, Christopher Lee plays a demented count (not Dracula, but Regula) who attempts to kill 13 virgins in order to attain immortality, while Death Smiles on a Murderer stars Klaus Kinski as a doctor who raises the dead to do his bidding.

Underground Classics: Sci-Fi at the Edge of Sanity!

This double feature of science fiction thrillers packages together Red Cockroaches, a tale set in a futuristic New York overrun by -- you guessed it -- red cockroaches, and Magdalena's Brain, about a pair of scientists who will stop at nothing in order to create a revolutionary type of artificial intelligence.

The Undertow

A group of friends on a river trip discovers to their dismay that that the small town they're entering doesn't welcome strangers and in fact uses a seven-foot-tall deformed maniac to dispose of them.
