- 1). Know the phone number you are calling. All phone numbers in Mexico are composed of 10 digits. In Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey, the are code is a 2-digit number followed by an 8-digit phone number. The rest of the country has 3-digit area codes and 7-digit phone numbers. See Resources for a complete listing of area codes.
- 2). Check the time. Remember that Mexico has three different time zones, which correspond to the Pacific, Mountain and Central time zones in the U.S. (See Resources.)
- 3). Dial out of the United States. In order to exit the numbering plan for the Unites States, you must signal to the switchboard that you are exiting the United States calling system, which you do by entering the code 011.
- 4). Dial the country code for Mexico. Mexico's country code is +52.
- 5). Dial the area code and phone number of the person you are calling in Mexico. The number will be as follows: 011 +52, followed by the 10-digit phone number.
- 6). To call a mobile phone in Mexico, include a "1" between the exit country code and the phone number. Dial 011 +52 1, followed by the mobile number. A cell phone must be on an international calling plan to access phones in Mexico from the United States. If your mobile phone is capable of making international calls, you can use it to call Mexico.
