Eczema Care for Babies and Young Children

Eczema is very common in infants and young children. One of every ten kids suffers from eczema. Symptoms disappear after several months or years but for some they may suffer throughout their adult life. Children suffering from eczema usually have dry, itchy, flaky skin which can easily cause infections when not properly treated or cared.
A child suffering from eczema needs to bath at least once a day. This helps to keep their skin moisturized. Bathing also helps wash off germs, dirt and allergens. However, when bathing an infant or child a lot of things should be kept in mind. Use tepid lukewarm water and never hot. Bathing time should never exceed 5 to 20 minutes and as it might cause dryness of skin. Always choose a fragrance free, mild soap and shampoo. When done bathing tenderly tap child's skin until partially dry and immediately apply prescriptions ointments, or use 100% Pure and Natural Emu Oil. Otherwise, use a mild, non-fragrant moisturizer to help lock in moisture in skin.
During bedtime, take care a child's skin by making sure the infant or child wear clothes that are loose, comfortable and are made of cotton. They may find sleeping difficult due to constant itching and scratching of skin, it helps to apply moisturizer before sleeping. Always keep child's room clean, free from dust or any allergens. Make sure to always change child's beddings and pillow cases and vaccuum foam and sofas. It also helps when you remove unnecessary stuffed toys from his room and pets should never be allowed inside. Temperature of their bedrooms should be kept at a comfortable level. Avoid excessively hot or cold temperature.
Keep their fingernails short and smooth to avoid further irritation of the skin and let them wear cotton gloves and socks. For other eczema skin care tips, use adequate to generous amount of water when doing child's laundry to properly eliminate residues from soaps. It's sad but true that perspiration causes eczema flare-ups, so even though it may sound cruel, but keeping your child from excessive sweating or at least under control helps alleviate his discomfort. When you observe your child scratching skin excessively, try to divert attention by letting him or her pre-occupied with other things and reward the child for not scratching.
Consistent effort to an established skin care routine for your child is one of the vital key to improving and treating your infant or children's eczema.
