How to Take Motorcycle Curves

    • 1). Look ahead of where you are going, scanning for obstacles along the road and looking for the "entrance" of the turn. This is the point at which you will begin to steer into the turn. Keep your eyes on this area as you approach.

    • 2). Set your body position on the motorcycle by shifting your weight into the direction of the turn. How far you shift your weight will depend mostly on your riding style and the type of motorcycle you ride, but be sure to move your weight past the center of your motorcycle.

    • 3). Shift into a lower gear to keep your motorcycle within its torque range, providing the maximum amount of usable power by raising the motor's RPMs (revolutions per minute).

    • 4). Release the throttle and brake firmly as you approach the entrance to the turn. Decelerate with the motorcycle upright to set your entrance speed at a comfortable pace. Release the brake lever as soon as you have slowed to your desired entrance speed.

    • 5). Initiate the turn as you approach the turn's entrance point. Counter-steer into the turn using one hand, pushing firmly on the handle bar on the inside of the direction of the turn. For example, a left hand turn will require you to push the left handlebar to initiate the turn.

    • 6). Roll the throttle on slightly as you pass the apex, the tightest portion of the turn, to settle your motorcycle's suspension. Counter-steering out of the turn, push the handlebar opposite of the turn's direction to straighten the motorcycle. Apply the throttle smoothly to accelerate away from the turn as the motorcycle becomes upright again.
