- 1). Look for the genitals of the catfish by locating two openings on the belly side of the catfish. Find the opening that is closest to the tail, which is the genital opening. Male catfish have a genital opening that is raised and resembles a nipple; female catfish have a genital opening that is flat and round.
- 2). Examine the abdomen and head size of the catfish. The female catfish has a much fuller abdomen and smaller head than the male catfish.
- 3). Watch how the catfish performs in the water. Female catfish are generally stronger and more robust than male catfish.
- 4). Look over the body of the catfish; female catfish are typically larger and heavier than male catfish, with longer bodies. Male catfish are more slender with brighter tails.
- 5). Check the shape of the catfish's fins. The fins on male catfish taper to a point; female fins have a more rounded shape.
