My Favorite DIY Trail Mixes
Trail mix is a great snack to carry to training. Packed with ingredients to give you energy and stave off hunger, trail mixes have the added benefit of being light and easy to pack into your cheer bag. Unfortunately, trail mixes can also be expensive, so why not make your own?
In Build A Better Snack, I gave you some ideas for making your own trail mixes at home. You can pick and choose what you want to add in, creating a snack which you love that is also healthy.
If you aren’t feeling adventurous and would rather go with tried and true recipes, here are few of my favorites to try.
Cheeky Monkey:
This yummy mix combines dried cherries, banana chips, cashew nuts, and dark chocolate chips for a trail mix that is good for you, but feels a little bit naughty.
1 cup cashew nuts
1/2 cup banana chips
1/4 cup dried cherries
1/4 cup dark chocolate chips
Mix all of the ingredients together to make 2 cups of trail mix. Store in an airtight container in a cool place out of direct sunlight.
Halloween Scream:
This trail mix screams Halloween with it’s mix of candy corn and pumpkins seeds.
1 cup peanuts
1/4 cup dried cranberries
1/2 cup pumpkin seeds
1/4 cup candy corn
Mix everything together and store in a airtight container in a cool, dark place like a cupboard or pantry.
Fall Festival:
This mix reminds me of Thanksgiving with it’s pumpkin pie spice and dried apples. It has to be my all-time favorite.
1/2 cup honey or maple granola
1/4 cup pecans
1/2 cup pumpkin seeds
1/2 cup dried apple chunks
1/4 cup dried cranberries
1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
Mix everything together in a Ziploc bag except for the pumpkin pie spice. Sprinkle the spice in last and give the bag a good shake to add a ducting of the spice to each piece of trail mix. Squeeze out any excess air and store the bag in a cabinet.
Paradise Mix:
This mix reminds me of summer and the Outer Banks with it's tasty pineapple chunks and fragrant coconut.
1/2 cup cashew nuts
1/2 cup banana chips
1/2 cup dried pineapple chunks
1/4 cup coconut flakes
1/4 cup white chocolate chips
Mix all of the ingredients together and store them in an airtight container in a cool, dark place.
Simply Indulgent:
Okay, maybe this one is my favorite. I am seriously obsessed with both dries strawberries and chocolate covered espresso beans. Be careful, though, this mix packs a lot of calories and caffeine. Eat it in moderation!
1/2 cup pistachios
1/2 cup pretzels
1/2 cup dried strawberries
1/4 cup dark chocolate chips
1/4 cup chocolate covered espresso beans
Mix the ingredients together in an airtight container and store in a cool dark place.
Winter Wonderland:
This mix is a little higher in sugar thanks to the candy cane chunks and white chocolate chips, but it is really nice when you are hiking through the forest on a frosty day.
1/2 cup almonds
1/2 cup Chex cereal
1/4 cup dried cranberries
1/4 cup white chocolate chips
1/4 cup candy cane chunks
1/4 cup pretzel sticks
To make candy cane chunks, place a couple of unwrapped candy canes in doubles Ziploc bags and hit them with a hammer a few times to break them into chunks. Combine those chunks with the rest of the ingredients and store them in the cupboard or pantry in an airtight container.
All of these recipes will last up to a month if they are kept airtight and out of direct sunlight or heat. Of course, you will probably eat them much sooner than that! Just remember to use them as a training snack and eat them in moderation to avoid adding extra calories to your otherwise healthy diet.
