- 1). Cut 1/8 yard of coated nylon off the main section of fabric. This will be used for reinforcing the corners of the tarp. Cut the remaining section of fabric in half, leaving you two pieces, each 6 feet long. These pieces should have a width of about 45 inches, depending on the fabric, since this can vary from brand to brand.
- 2). Place the long ends of the fabric together, allowing them to overlap 1/2 inch. Pin them together, then sew them using polyester thread. Double stitch the seam for extra strength. When you are done, you should have a rectangle about 6 feet by 7.5 feet. These measurements can be adjusted to fit your needs.
- 3). Fold over the edge of the outside of the tarp about 3/4 inch and pin it down. Sew this edge to form the border of the tarp. This will prevent fraying and will strengthen the edges of the tarp.
- 4). Cut eight pieces of nylon from the 1/8 yard of extra fabric. These pieces should be 4 inches by 4 inches, and will be used for reinforcing the tie-downs. Sew one square into each corner of the tarp, forming a patch in each corner. Sew one more in the center of each side.
- 5). Cut eight pieces of nylon webbing that are 6 inches long. Fold each piece over to make a loop, and pin the ends to the center of each support square, with the loop hanging off the edge of the tarp. Sew these pieces of webbing down securely with two strong seams on each section of the strap.
