How do I Winterize a GE Water Softener?

    • 1). Shut off water to the softener at your home's main shut-off value.

    • 2). Open a faucet in the kitchen or bathroom sink to vent pressure from the softener unit.

    • 3). Move the stem to the by-pass if a single by-pass valve connects the home water supply to the softener. On a three-valve by-pass system, close the inlet and outlet valves. If you need water in the rest of the house, open the by-pass valve and turn the main water shut-off valve back on.

    • 4). Unplug the transformer from the wall outlet. Carefully remove the holding clips at the water softener inlet and outlet and separate the softener from the adapters or the by-pass valve.

    • 5). Remove the brine well cover and disconnect the brine valve tubing at the nozzle. Lift the brine valve out of the brine well.

    • 6). Lay a piece of 2-inch-thick board on the floor near a floor drain. Move the softener close to the drain and lay it on its side until the tank rim rests on the board with both the inlet and outlet over the floor drain. Gently lift the bottom of the softener up and drain the brine well and tank. Hold it up until all the water has drained out.

    • 7). Leave the softener on its side until you are ready to use it again. Stuff rags into the inlet and outlets to keep dirt and bugs out.
