- 1). Call the Central Office of the Housing Authority Birmingham District at 1-205- 324-0641 or visit the Housing Authority of Birmingham District and inquire about the eligibility criteria and any documentation needed for government housing. The Housing Authority of Birmingham District is located at 1826 3rd Avenue South, P.O. Box 55906 Birmingham, Alabama 35255-5906.
- 2). Gather the documents needed to complete an application. Documentation includes the Social Security cards and birth certificate for all household members, photo identification for all household members 18 years old and older, proof of household income and copy of marriage license. In addition, the applicants must be at least 19 years of age; members must have a clear background check, good loan repayment history and positive references from previous landlords.
- 3). Request and complete an application at the property management office in the community you wish to live. There are more than 12 property management offices posted on the Housing Authority of Birmingham District's website or you can speak with a housing counselor to obtain additional information.
- 4). Wait to hear from the housing counselor, who will send written notice regarding your eligibility. If you are eligible, you will be put on a waiting list for available housing that meets your needs. If you do not meet the eligibility criteria, the reason for denial is also provided in writing to you, as well as an opportunity to request a hearing.
