Jerry Seinfeld was laughed at when he carried a European purse on one of the episodes.
A decade or two later, man bags are becoming fashionable.
I have been carrying one for over a decade.
Since my back pain episode, I discovered a wallet in the back pocket was very uncomfortable and irritated my sensitive back, especially when sitting down.
Seeing how women figured it out, I adopted their method, and have been carrying a murse (man purse) ever since.
This month though, Tim Hutchful from the British Chiropractic Association (BCA) claimed "(Man bags) could cause back and shoulder pain from prolonged stress, this could also impact posture.
"We need to become more savvy in how we use them, whilst learning to read our bodies and know when we're placing too much pressure on certain points.
" I won't stop using them.
All you have to do to avoid putting everything back in your pockets is to strengthen the core muscles and the lower back and bring the body back into realignment in the evening by performing a few full body stretches.
Not only are murses finally fashionable, but they are quite functional.
You can fit everything into one bag, and leave your pockets empty and comfortable the whole day.
Carry them, and just make sure you adopt the right routine for your day to avoid injury.
The BCA's claim is correct, bags or anything you carry for that matter that causes your body to contort to one side, can cause back ache.
It's all about symmetry and balance.
When you body has to strain to only one side, muscle groups will get stronger only on that side and throw your alignment off.
As my wise Chinese healer told me, "Even when sweeping the floor, always switch sides".
So carry the bag on both sides.
It will be strange the first few times and second nature afterward.
You can always realign your body with a full body stretch and a core strengthening routine to keep that bulged disc from flaring up.
Whatever it takes to stay in fashion.
How's your back?
