For students outside the United States interested in pursuing their undergraduate studies at an American college, financial aid can be a deciding factor in their ability to attend. With the additional costs of international travel and personal and living expenses, the total cost of attending college as an international student can often be even higher than for domestic students. While non-U.S. citizens are not eligible for federal and state aid programs, a growing number of top colleges and universities offer both merit and need-based institutional aid for international students. According to the U.S. News & World Report’s annual survey, nearly 375 ranked colleges and universities offered financial aid to more than 50 international undergraduate students, awarding an average aid package of $18,790.

Several of the nation’s highest-ranked colleges are among those offering financial aid to students from outside the U.S. A handful of the nation’s elite universities even offer need-blind, full-need admissions for domestic and international students, meaning that accepted students who cannot afford the full cost of attendance will be awarded enough institutional aid to make up the difference.
