If you love playing softball, I am sure that you would want to play this game day in and day out with your team. But you must also consider that since this particular sporting activity is generally played outside on a field, your body loses a lot of water through perspiration. If you are unable to replenish the water that you lose during the game, then, it is highly likely that this would lead dehydration.
In order to prevent dehydration, you must be able to know how much and how often you need to drink fluids when you have softball trainings as well as tournaments. Both the amount of fluids and frequency of hydrating for one person is notably different from another due to the uniqueness of each person's body system. And so, here are some softball nutrition tips that you need to know in order to help yourself stay hydrated during a workout.
Drink before you feel thirsty. Most athletes would just take in fluids when they feel thirsty. But what they do not know is that if they wait for them to feel thirsty before they drink fluids, they can already be dehydrated at that point. And when they are already dehydrated, this can totally affect their performance.
You must know how much you sweat because if you do, you would be able to know how much fluids you need to consume and how often you need to hydrate yourself. Otherwise, you would suffer from chronic dehydration and, thus, put your performance on the field at risk.
Refrain from taking in too much fluids before a workout or a game as this would just cause you to urinate a lot during this activity. Just drink the sufficient amount of fluids before you exercise and, then, drink again afterwards.
Water is always the best to drink in order to prevent dehydration. But you can also consume sports drinks as a replacement, especially since it contains electrolytes that can help your body stay hydrated.
Avoid drinking soda and alcohol as they would just make your body feel even more dehydrated. But if you would like to drink these, take them after your workout with a lot of water.
It is important for you to just drink sufficient amount of fluids because, otherwise, you may overhydrate yourself, which can cause you to have low blood sodium. This, in turn, can cause you to have seizures, coma and even death.
To avoid hyponatremia, be sure to eat foods that contain a healthy dose of sodium such as pretzels, soup and olives.
Dehydration can lead to muscle cramps and in order to avoid this from happening, be sure to drink fluids that contain sodium when you have softball trainings and tournaments.
Generally, caffeine is bad for your body as it can cause dehydration but if you only take in tiny doses only, then, it is highly unlikely that you would develop dehydration or even urinate often.
Along with fluids, be sure to consume a sufficient amount of carbohydrates so, that your body would have enough calories to use during softball trainings and tournaments.
Being good at softball is not just about having the right skills. It is also very important for you to practice proper hydration so, that you would be able to enjoy what you are doing and you would be able to boost your total performance.
