How to Caulk a Huge Gap

    • 1). Put on a pair of protective gloves and make sure you are in a well-ventilated workspace. Load the butyl sealant into a caulking gun with the nozzle facing away from the trigger.

    • 2). Apply a bead of caulk 1/4-inch thick or less at one end of the gap. Use the back of an old spoon to smooth the caulk along the length of the seam until it is evenly spread.

    • 3). Repeat the process for the entire length of the gap. Press the butyl caulk firmly into the gap so that it is flush with the surface and allow it to cure overnight.

    • 4). Insert the caulking gun deep into the seam for huge gaps that need to be completely sealed. Apply the butyl caulk and allow it to expand in order to fill the space entirely.

    • 5). Use the back of the spoon to level the caulk when it has surfaced. Clean the spoon and any excess caulk with a commercial caulk remover or mineral spirits.
