Savannah, Georgia, Vacation Guide

    Accommodations

    • The first step in planning your Savannah getaway is to choose a place to stay. Bed and breakfast establishments dot the historic district including the Foley House Inn, The Gastonian and the Foley-Turner Inn. Those who prefer a more traditional option can find major chains, independent inns and boutique hotels throughout the city and in outlying areas. For something different, consider renting a beach house in nearby Tybee Island.

    History

    • Savannah is all about history. From antebellum homes to historic cemeteries to the city's many monuments, visitors have many opportunities to pay homage to the past. See the waving girl statue at the east end of River Street and read about her mission. Visit the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial, the Fort Pulaski National Monument, the Juliet Gordon Lowe Birthplace or the Wormesloe Historic Site to learn about the famous residents and rich history of Savannah.

    Food

    • Half the fun of going on vacation is eating out at new and interesting restaurants. Savannah is well-known for its seafood restaurants and barbecue joints. Beer lovers can eat at one of the city's microbreweries and sample the local brews at the same time. Landmarks such as Paula Deen's "Lady & Sons" and the supposedly haunted "Pirate's House" offer traditional Southern cooking with a touch of sophistication. After lunch or dinner, stroll down to River Street and sample the city's famous pralines.

    Tours

    • If you enjoy architecture, tour a historic home or one of the historic churches such as the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist or the Congregation Mickve Israel. Literature lovers may enjoy one of the many tours based on the famous novel "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil." Fans of haunted history can choose from a variety of ghost tours, including walking tours, trolley tours and even tours conducted by hearse.

    Water Fun

    • Savannah is a seaport town and offers several options for water lovers. Consider a lunch, dinner or entertainment cruise down the Savannah River. Charter a boat tour of the marshlands or a deep-sea fishing trip. Or nip over to nearby Tybee Island for a day of fun in the sun on the beaches. Be sure to visit the Tybee Island lighthouse and look out on the whole area from up above.
