Argentine Style Restaurants in Philadelphia

    • Traditional Argentine cuisine is mostly characterized by grilled meats and barbecues, the staple food of the gaucho or South American cowboy. However, small baked or fried pastries stuffed with cheese and ham, meat or vegetables called empanadas are also a favorite in Argentina, reports Argentina's Travel Guide. The barbecue culture of Argentina is also very present in the neighboring southern states of Brazil. Although Philadelphia does not have any traditional Argentine restaurant, it has a restaurant-bar serving some Argentine dishes and two typical southern Brazilian gaucho grills.

    Mixto

    • Located on the east side of downtown Philadelphia, Mixto is a bar and restaurant offering Latin American, Cuban and Caribbean dishes and cocktails. The breakfast menu at Mixto includes Argentine steak with eggs. For lunch and dinner, there is Churrasco Argentino -- a cut of outside skirt steak, served with garlic roasted potatoes and vegetables. Mixto also serves the traditional empanadas.

    Fogo de Chao

    • Located at the historical Caldwell's Jewelry building, Fogo de Chao is a south Brazilian steakhouse serving 15 cuts of meat in a continuous table-side service. The signature dishes is Picanha, a prime cut of top sirloin, very popular in South Brazil and Argentina. Although the churrasco or barbecue is the main attraction at Fogo the Chao, the restaurant also has a buffet with more than 30 items, including salads, imported cheeses, artisan breads and cured meats.

    Chima

    • Chima steakhouse is located in central Philadelphia, and is named after "chimarrao," a traditional tea-like drink of Rio Grande do Sul State, in Brazil, also called "mate" in Argentina. This steakhouse offers 11 cuts of meat, plus sausages and grilled fish. The salad bar has smoked salmon, shrimps, artichoke hearts, eggplant, rice and breads. The desert menu includes international dishes and cheesecake with capuacu, a tropical fruit native of Brazil.
