Why Do White Fences Turn Yellow?

    Titanium Dioxide Treatment

    • The chemical substance titanium dioxide keeps fencing from turning yellow. Titanium dioxide is a white pigment that is applied to the fencing during the manufacturing process and blocks the sun's rays from being absorbed. The chemical does not wash off nor does it contaminate the environment by chipping off, but titanium dioxide does not repel dirt and dust.

    Cleaning

    • If your fencing does not contain titanium dioxide, use a water hose containing a sprayer to remove any dirt and dust from the fencing. Washing helps keep the fence's surface from turning yellow, but washing alone does not stop your fencing from turning yellow. Washing fencing that contains titanium dioxide is also safe.

    Deterioration

    • Failure to keep your home's fencing clean can lead to it peeling, chipping and cracking. Eventually, the fencing will rot, including any posts the fencing is attached to. Any metal fasteners and components will rust if not treated with an anti-rust agent. Fence cleaning solutions and anti-rust chemicals are available at hardware and home improvement stores as well as online.

    Using a UV Blocker

    • Commercial UV blockers are also available at hardware and home improvement stores for fencing that does not contain titanium dioxide. The chemical comes in a gallon bucket and rolls on like paint. The chemical blocks UV rays, moisture and temperature changes. Follow all recommendations on the chemical's container when applying the substance. Cover any landscaping under the fencing with plastic sheeting or similar material to keep the UV blocker off of any plants, grass and flowers.
