Crazy Wedding Cake Ideas

    Topsy Turvy Cakes

    • Topsy turvy cakes involve cake tiers lifted at angles and filled with flowers, cupcakes or other cake fillers. Each topsy turvy tier sits at a 45-degree angle upon a foam block, with each tier alternating left or right in the way it drops down. Once assembled, the cake will look as though it is toppling over at the reception, even though it is sturdy and not going anywhere.

    Themed Cakes

    • Rather than having a traditional wedding cake, try a sports-themed cake instead. These cakes can have jerseys, sports paraphernalia or even represent specific sporting teams. Cakes can still be in the traditional tiered look, or can be shaped into a jersey, baseball or even a famous stadium. If you and your fiance share a love for a particular movie, consider a movie-themed cake. You might base a wedding cake around James Bond, The Nightmare Before Christmas and Jurassic Park---have a 3D dinosaur cake at your wedding!

    Sculpted Cakes

    • Sculpted and 3D cakes have a more personal touch than the standard tiered wedding cake. Cakes can be sculpted into shapes such as a bunch of books stacked on top of one another, a set of pillows or even a 3D representation of the bride herself.

    Recreational Fun

    • For the couple that has fun outside together, a cake that is based on their recreation can be both representative of the couple and a crazy idea. Try a Harley-Davidson cake with bride and groom bikes, flames and the Harley-Davidson logo. Ask for a 3D replication of your beloved boat, on a blue water base. Or, try a sport fishing cake with a large fish popping up out of the top of the wedding cake.

    Cakes That Are Not Cake

    • A wedding cake does not have to actually be made from cake. Create a tower of donuts in the shape of a cake, or, if you're a fan of other types of treats, make a tower of muffins, apple turnovers or snack cakes. For a touch of French sophistication, consider serving a croquembouche, a tower assembled using sweet rolls and covered with a sugar glaze, instead of a traditional wedding cake.

    Video Games

    • Video game cakes can give an edge to your wedding reception. Because video games are very elaborate and creative, each one with a specific world, your cake can be shaped, colored and carved into an array of styles. Try a Mario Brothers-themed cake with large mushrooms, clouds and gold coins. Or, if you love to play a particular gaming machine, have your wedding cake made to look like an Xbox or Wii.

    Light-Up Cakes

    • A traditional wedding cake can still be crazy with the right effects. Try pairing your wedding cake with black lights on the cake table, to make your white wedding cake glow at the reception. Use white or different-colored LED lights in glass vases to separate each tier, for an added light effect. Push white LED Christmas lights into white buttercream frosting and wrap them up around the cake just like you would a Christmas tree.
