Here's How to Do Garage Door Troubleshooting

Owners of homes with garages should plan to do regular monthly maintenance checks to insure that their garage door will work promptly and correctly. These systems when installed properly won't usually require much attention, but what do you do in the case where your system is faulty? It's really best to leave garage door repair to a pro. The counter balance springs have stored energy that can deal damage when unexpectedly released.

How to Fix Common Problems

Are you determined to do your own garage door repairs? Here's some questions and answers so that you can proceed without getting hurt.

Q: The garage door keeps closing and then reversing back to original starting position

Every garage door has what the pro's call a "garage door limit switch." What this switch does is change how far the system needs to push to close the door.If you were to set the garage door to close further than it should, the garage door could actually hit the foor and the and the safety mechanism will engage. What happens then is that the garage door reverses back to its starting position.

Q: What do I do when the garage door won't close when using the remote control

A: If you've got a problem and can't close the garage door normally by trying to close it manually at the wall...then the issue is with the actual garage door opener itself. If you can close the garage door manually then chances are you have a problem with one or both of the safety sensors. Always check to see if you've got anything that's blocking the sensors. You might have some dirt on one of both of the lenses. Just find a cloth and give both of your lenses a good wipe down and that should fix the issue.

Q: My garage door isn't responsponding! What do I do? There isn't any movement or sound coming from the garage door

A: First things first, check the garage door opener and see if you can see any of the lights on and working. If they aren't on then check the circuit breaker. If there are lights are showing on the sensors, it's possible the push bottom wire has shorted. Go and check the cable which is below the switch and see if there's any current. If the cable is getting voltage, try this. What you do is try shorting the switch to see if the garage door opens. That should at least open the garage door and start the process of fixing your problem.
