There are many things needed to help you with Construction Management.
There are schedules, estimating systems, accounting systems, record keeping systems, billing systems and good old human resource management.
In this article I will address the importance of making a construction schedule.
When making a construction schedule, you must look at it as a tool that helps you to build you project on paper.
As you put together the schedule, you must start from the very beginning and end up with the final stages known as the deficiencies.
Let's put together a simple schedule for building a garden shed.
Although it is unlikely you would make a schedule for building a garden shed, it will show us the concept.
The first step is to prepare the site.
The next step would be to install a foundation; in this case we could use some concrete cinder blocks.
On these blocks we would install the framing and plywood floor.
Then we would do the wall framing and roof framing, making sure we frame the door and window.
Plywood would also be used for the roof, and then we could install the roof shingles.
Next we would install the door and frame along with the window and frame.
Finally we would put the wall covering, perhaps a vinyl siding.
Now that your shed is complete you could add shelving and hooks so that you can get the best use out of your shed.
This is how your schedule would look.
Activity Day 1 Day 2 Day3 Day 4 Day 5 Day 6 Prepare site ____ Install foundation, ____ Framing & plywood Wall and roof framing ____ Plywood roof & shingles ____ Install door and window ____ Install siding ____ Install shelving ____ And hooks A shed could probably be built in 2 days but for the purpose of demonstrating how a schedule works, I made it longer.
With this schedule you are able to determine the material and tools needed to do the project and since it has been built on paper it will be easier to build in place more efficiently.
