The History Channel invested approximately 30 million dollars into the making of the film that was directed by Emmy award-winning John Cassar who is known for his work on the popular television show, 24. In addition, professional historians were hired to constantly review the script for accuracy and suggest changes as necessary to maintain the authenticity of the family. The film was shot across 34 locations and the crew worked to recreate the famous Kennedy Compound in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts. Producers referred to pictures of the Kennedys to design scenery and costumes to be as authentic as possible down to the smallest detail, like the items on John F. Kennedy's desk in the White House.
To engage audiences in the film, the proper cast was needed to bring each role to life. The role of John F. Kennedy was won by popular American actor Greg Kinnear. Jackie Kennedy was performed by first choice actress, Katie Holmes. Producers felt that Katie Holmes could embrace the role as Jackie since she could relate to the media scrutiny and controversy in her own life. Tom Wilkinson and his real life wife, Diana Hardcastle, starred as Joseph P. Kennedy, Sr. and Rose Kennedy, famed matriarch and patriarch of the Kennedy dynasty. Canadian actor, Barry Pepper, was cast for the role of Bobby Kennedy. Each lead cast member had about 45 – 50 costumes and lengthy make-up sessions for each recording session.
Captured in the film is the tragic assassinations of John F. Kennedy and his brother Bobby which many believe was tied to their father's mob dealings. To this day, there are many questions that still surround the deaths, but as with many aspects of their lives no clear answers exist.
