- 1). Spackle nail holes and any other small holes in the paneling. When it has dried, sand the spackle flush with the wall.
- 2). Lightly sand the surface of the paneling and any trim you will be painting with 100-grit sandpaper. Sand only enough to rough the surface of the paneling.
- 3). Wash the walls with a damp sponge and mild cleanser. This will remove dirt as well as the dust caused when sanding.
- 4). If there are gaps where the paneling butts against doors, window or trim, fill them with caulk. Allow the caulk to dry thoroughly before proceeding.
- 5). Cover or mask off any areas you do not want to paint, such as windows, trim and floors.
- 6). Apply a stain-blocking latex primer to the paneling with a medium-nap roller. Use a brush to prime any areas you cannot reach with the roller.
- 7). Apply paint to the paneling with a medium-nap roller. Plan to apply two thin coats of paint rather than one heavy coat. As with the primer, use a brush to paint any areas you cannot reach with the roller.
